EL wires provide glowing, flashing lines of light which can be bent and formed to decorate anything from car or building interior, bike, or clothing.  EL panels and lamps are great for illuminated back-lit display of photos, crafts or advertising  signage, instrument panels and point of purchase signage.  Panels can even be custom made to your design and stitched into clothing.

 

All EL lamps, electroluminescent wires and sheets draw very little power, therefore, produce little heat, and, because they don't contain filaments or mechanical parts, they are not susceptible to shock, vibration or catastrophic light failure.

Unlike directional light sources such as LED's and incandescent, electroluminescent illumination evenly distributes and sources light only where it is needed instead of shining on an area from a distance therefore no light is wasted or diffused.  It can illuminate a wide area instead of simply a point or line source like other forms of illumination.  

Since the 1930’s Electroluminescent technology has been available but due to high costs it has remained fairly exclusive to the medical and aviation industry.

 Recent innovations in production and lower cost materials have now made EL technology available to the wider community yet in Australia it is still a fairly new concept.

How is the light created?

 EL is created by a reaction of an electrical field across a layer of phosphor. 

In the case of EL wire, the central conductor wire is coated in phosphor then wrapped in 2 fine electrode wires.  It is then sheathed in vinyl which may be clear or coloured and further sheaths are added to create wire with a greater diameter than 2.2mm.  Only the superfine 0.9mm has a core wire thinner than all the others.

EL panels and sheets are made slightly differently.  The phosphor is laid down across a conductor sheet and electrode tape runs around the border.  The whole sheet is encased in plastic laminate.

 The electrical field is created by a small unit known as an inverter or driver and the choice of driver is specific to either the length length of wire or the total surface area of EL being powered.

 

 Characteristics of EL wire:

  • ·        Homogenous light source 360degrees around the wire.

  • ·        Endless colour choices controlled in part by the phosphor, the frequency applied and the coloured vinyl coating.

  • ·        From 0.9mm – 5mm diameters. 

  • ·        Low power draw equivalent to approx 1-10% of the total power needed for neon lighting,  50-70% LED, 20-40% rope lamp.

  • ·        Safe next to skin as there is virtually no heat loss and the working current is harmless to the human body. People with vinyl allergies should avoid use close to the skin.

  • ·        Flexible. Soft EL wire will spring back to shape whereas stiff EL wire will hold its shape.

  • ·        Great in low light situations and subtle enough that you can stare directly at the light source and won’t be left with a visual scorch which can take a while to go away.

  • ·        Brightness can be increased by running together 2 parallel lines.

  • ·        Length 0.5 to 100M.

Characteristics of EL panels:

  • ·        Looks and feels like a laminated document – less than 0.5mm thick.

  • ·        Flexible, can be curved

  • ·        Almost unbreakable

  • ·        As they don't contain filaments or mechanical parts, they are not susceptible to shock or vibration.

  • ·        Uniform diffuse luminosity across panel – no glare

  • ·        Negligible heat loss

  • ·        Low Power Consumption – consumes 75-90% less power than a point light source such as LED

  • ·        High efficiency – approx 80% of energy is converted to light.

  • ·        Colours – various colours available.  Intensity can be increased with increase frequency but this decreases the life span.  If intense colours are required, sometimes an overlay will provide the solution.  We currently only carry white sheets that have a light pink colour when off.

  • ·        Brightness – good in low level light situations.  Increasing the voltage will increase brightness but this will decrease life span although it will be to a lesser degree than the decrease caused by increasing frequency.

  • ·        Size: up to 120 x 80cm.  We currently only stock A4 size but any size can be ordered.  Minimum order and tooling costs will apply.

EL inverters convert the DC input current to the required AC necessary current to operate the lamp. The inverter is critical to the overall performance of the lamp's durability, power consumption, size and weight and, of course, the cost of the completed system. Operating EL lamps at brighter illumination may shorten the lamp life. If your design would lend itself to a flashing light, it would assist in reducing power consumption, enhance and spotlight the visual effect, and extend the battery life, but this might add cost and size to the inverter Variety of Shapes and Sizes
